Shedley Wines Vineyard, Winery and Cellar Door Sales operates from the Shedley family’s 400ha property “Kingsley Downs,” 16km east of Bridgetown in the farming district of Winnijup. Chris Shedley bought Kingsley Downs from Gwen and Bert Read in 1980 as an operating mixed farm. They continued running sheep and cropping until 1997 when they established a commercial Bluegum plantation.

This plantation is now into its second rotation. Fine wool Merino sheep are still run, although at much lower stock numbers than were run before the plantation enterprise was developed. Kingsley Downs is fairly high in the landscape so has deep gravelly soils and rolling hills with occasional outcrops of granite and dolerite. There are several blocks of good quality remnant Jarrah and Marri Forest which have been fenced off from stock for a number of years.

Most of the creek lines have also been fenced off and are being actively regenerated to their native vegetation. The long term average annual rainfall is about 700mm which mainly falls between April and November. Winters are cool and wet, and summers are warm and dry, making an ideal climate for wine grapes.
